Student Credit Hour and FTE Help

DEFINITIONS

Academic Year: Full year beginning with fall term: Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer. Note: data are reported according to the Fiscal Year

Course Level: Course credit hour data are organized by course level, which correspond to the course numbering system. For additional information, see Course Credit Hours (level detail) and Course Credit Hours (UG/GR) definitions.

Course Credit Hours (level detail): Data summarized by Lower Division Course, Upper Division Course, and Graduate Course. See definitions of each for additional detail.

Course Credit Hours (UG/GR): Data summarized by Undergraduate Course and Graduate Course. See definitions of each for additional detail.

Credit Hour: Courses are assigned credit hours based on the amount of instruction and related coursework per week. One credit hour typically represents the equivalent of an hour (50 minutes) of instruction per week over the entire term. The total credit hours generated by a course equal the number of credit hours associated with the course multiplied by the number of students enrolled in the course, as measured following the fourth week of classes. See the Credit Hour/FTE Example for more information.

Fiscal Year: Full year beginning with summer term (i.e. July 1): Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring

Full-time equivalent (FTE): A calculation that translates student credit hours into an equivalent number of full-time, full-year students. The calculation varies depending on the level of student. The full-time equivalent for an undergraduate student is 45 student credit hours, or 15 credits for three terms. The full-time equivalent for a master’s or law student is 36 student credit hours, or 12 credits for three terms. The full-time equivalent for a PhD student is 27 student credit hours, or 9 credits for three terms. FTE is derived by dividing student credit hours by the full-time, full-year equivalent for the given level. For example, FTE for undergraduate students can be calculated by dividing undergraduate student credit hours by 45.

FTE (level detail): Data summarized by Lower Division Student, Upper Division Student, Master’s Student, Law Student, and PhD Student. See definitions of each for additional detail.

FTE (UG/GR): Data summarized by Undergraduate Student and Graduate Student. See definitions of each for additional detail.

Graduate Student: Includes Master’s Students, Law Students, and PhD Students from the student level detail report. See definitions of each for additional detail.

Graduate Course: Courses numbered 500 and higher.

Law Student: Students admitted into the Law School.

Lower Division Course: Courses numbered 100 and 200.

Lower Division Student: Students classified as freshmen and sophomores, as defined by the number of credit hours completed; and non-admitted students completing undergraduate coursework.

Master’s Student: Students admitted into a graduate-level program and classified as a master’s student based on their admission status and/or the number of credit hours completed; and non-admitted students completing graduate coursework.

PhD Student: Students admitted into a graduate-level program and classified as a doctoral student based on their admission status and/or the number of credit hours completed.

Regular Credit Hours: Credit hours (or the equivalent FTE) generated in courses that are subject to the University of Oregon’s tuition and fee schedule. The term “regular” distinguishes these courses from Self-Support Courses.

Self-Support Credit Hours: Credit hours (or the equivalent FTE) generated in courses that charge a fixed fee in lieu of tuition. The fee is set at an amount that allows the course to be “self-supporting” in the absence of tuition.

Student Credit Hours (level detail): Data summarized by Lower Division Student, Upper Division Student, Master’s Student, Law Student, and PhD Student. See definitions of each for additional detail.

Student Credit Hours (UG/GR): Data summarized by Undergraduate Student and Graduate Student. See definitions of each for additional detail.

Student Level: Student credit hour and FTE data are organized by student level, which refers to a student’s class standing: freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, post-baccalaureate, master’s, law, and doctoral. For additional information, see definitions for Student Credit Hours (level detail), Student Credit Hours (UG/GR), FTE (level detail), and FTE (UG/GR).

Undergraduate Student: Includes Lower Division Students and Upper Division Students from the student level detail report. See definitions of each for additional detail.

Upper Division Course: Courses numbered 300 and 400.

Upper Division Student: Students classified as juniors and seniors, as defined by the number of credit hours completed; and post-baccalaureate students completing undergraduate coursework.
